Measuring over 21 feet in circumference this is no ordinary slab of wood in over 20 years of working with wood, we’ve never encountered a piece of arbutus on this scale. Arbutus (or Pacific Madrone) of this size and quality is exceptionally rare, growing only in very limited areas along our local coastlines. In the center of the tree, we’ve created a rainforest garden of West Coast succulents and mosses, lichens, bringing nature inside and reminding us of the regeneration that happens in our forests. Arbutus is notoriously difficult to work with — it twists, cracks, and resists predictability. But its beauty is undeniable. The wood boasts rich, complex tones and wild, intricate grain patterns that are unlike anything else in the world. And when you find a "cookie" (a cross-section of the tree trunk) of this size, it’s like unearthing buried treasure. A once-in-a-lifetime piece.
