A quick update to share our latest creation, Goliath. I'm so excited about this giant arbutus table that will be debuting at IDS Vancouver this week. This was a challenging build, read on to find out what special measures our team had to take to preserve this unique piece of the forest (and how we added a nod to its roots in the centre of the table).

GOLIATH

The Arbutus Cookie Table

Measuring over 21 feet in circumference, this is no ordinary slab of wood in over 20 years of working with wood, we’ve never encountered a piece of arbutus on this scale.

Arbutus (or Pacific Madrone) of this size and quality is exceptionally rare, growing only in limited areas along our local coastlines.

In the centre of the tree, we’ve created a rainforest garden of West Coast succulents, mosses and lichens, bringing nature inside and reminding us of the regeneration that happens in our forests.

Arbutus is notoriously difficult to work with — it twists, cracks, and resists predictability. But its beauty is undeniable. The wood boasts rich, complex tones and wild, intricate grain patterns that are unlike anything else in the world. And when you find a "cookie" (a cross-section of the tree trunk) of this size, it’s like unearthing buried treasure.

The filling process . . . using clay and clear resin in a temperature-controlled environment to ensure a strong bond. Too much heat creates bubbles and a reduced lifespan for the filling, so it's a critical step in preserving the wood and creating a functional dining surface.

What a Day! Highlights from Our September 12th Design Bus Tour

It was an incredible day filled with inspiration, connection, and community. We’ve received fantastic feedback from attendees about the tour, and we’re already thinking ahead to make the next one even better!

16 Interior Designers registered with the Vancouver Island Society of Interior Design came on the bus and spent the day with us.

Our journey took us to some of the Cowichan Valley’s finest design destinations, including:  Matrix Marble, Live Edge Design, Style Sense Furniture, Cowichan Woodworks, Creative Woodcraft, and Wescon Doors. Then we capped it off with a beautiful lunch at the scenic Blue Grouse Estate Winery.

The goal of the tour was simple: to bring together local interior designers and showcase the amazing talent and resources available right here in the Cowichan Valley. It was a chance to strengthen our design community, discover new local gems, and—most importantly—build relationships that will last well beyond the day.
